Spring 2013 may be Madewell’s most playful, exuberant collection yet. Cheery bold florals, citrus-hued lace, and pastel knits put a new youthful spin on the brand’s signature denim and preppy staples.The menswear- inspired button-downs, for instance, were lined with neon or stamped with massive floral prints; the standard chambray shirt, one of the brand’s mainstays, got hacked up and patched up this season, while some of the collection’s sweeter items, like a flowy long skirt or a mini-frock, were edged up with powerful hues like cobalt blue.
The footwear, usually a highlight for us, was more streamlined and sophisticated: We love the colorblock sandals with ankle straps. The loafers, skimmer flats and ankle boots, introduced in seasons past, solidified themselves as classics for the brand this season.
As is always the case with Madewell, the styling is a delight. What other brand could make a denim popover, bold leaf print skirt and stripe printed long-sleeve look so right together. One of the best styling tips to keep in mind for NYFW–we have a feeling lots of editors will be sporting it–is to think of a sweater tied around your waist as an accessory, not just a quick wardrobe fix.
